Davis-Chambers Scholarship Guidelines 2024-2025

These terms and requirements are effective for Davis-Chambers Scholarships awarded to new incoming first-year students for the 2024-25 academic year. The award is for up to four consecutive years.

1Renewal of this scholarship for each subsequent year is dependent upon the recipient maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 2.25 at the end of the freshman year. A cumulative grade point average of a 2.50 each year thereafter.  Renewal determinations are made at the end of each spring semester.  The University computes grade point averages to three decimal places and does not round.
2The recipient must enroll full-time (at least 12 UNL credit hours) during each semester of the academic year (fall and spring semesters).  These hours must be officially registered by the sixth day of classes each semester.
3The recipient must successfully complete 24 UNL credit hours each academic year (fall and spring semesters). Successful completion is defined as the sum of all UNL credit hours completed with a grade of A through D- or Pass (P).  Grades of I, N, W, F, and NR are not considered successfully completed.  Repeated courses will only count once and must be registered for consecutive semesters (i.e., full-time by sixth day of classes each semester).
4The scholarship will be discontinued if the recipient withdraws from school or fails to register for consecutive semesters, unless an exception is granted because of extenuating circumstances.
5One half of the annual Davis-Chambers commitment will be credited to the recipient's student account and will appear on his or her billing statement. Any student whose total scholarship and/or financial aid awards exceed his or her total institutional charges for a given semester will receive a refund for the difference from the Office of Student Accounts.
6The scholarship cannot be used for non-credit courses or non-term specific correspondence courses. The scholarship cannot be used for courses taken at UNO, UNK or UNMC.
7As a recipient, you must participate in a POWER program, which includes enrollment and participation in a weekly zero-credit course, academic success coaching, and events designed to support your success.  The course covers topics on finding your purpose, supporting your well-being, getting connected to organizations and peers on campus, and more. Sections are offered on various days and times to fit the rest of your course schedule. Recipients will receive more information at a later time regarding POWER requirements.
8For global experience programs, this scholarship may be applied toward UNL course credit (where tuition is charged). This scholarship cannot be applied toward course credit that will be transferred from another institution. Students may apply for a variety of scholarships specific to global experiences: Learn More
9This scholarship may be supported through the generosity of donors. If such is the case, you may be required to complete a thank you note.

THE DAVIS-CHAMBERS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Davis-Chambers Scholarship recognizes talented student scholars in the State of Nebraska who demonstrate how their unique cultural experiences, background, and special talents may contribute to the diversity in outlook, perspective, and experience of the student body at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  Awarded for the first time in 1990, the Davis Scholarship is recognized as one of the University's most prestigious awards.

The R.H. "Rick" Davis Scholarship endowment began with a $50,000 gift from the estate of Rick Davis, who died of cancer in 1988 at the age of 43. Rick was a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha where he became well known as an all-conference wide receiver on the football team.  He subsequently developed and headed Davis Insurance and Bonds, Inc. of Omaha.

Subsequent to Rick's death his brother, Dr. Dick Davis, conceived a plan to build Rick's initial gift into a major endowment in support of scholarships for students attending or desiring to attend the University of Nebraska.  Dick had been an outstanding football player at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, and went on to earn a Doctor of Education degree.  Following service as an Omaha Public Schools teacher and administrator (Principal of McMillan Junior High School), Dick served as Director of Administration and Government Relations for the Northern Plains Natural Gas Company before becoming Chairman of the Board for the Davis Companies in Omaha.  He is an extremely active leader in both the Omaha community and the State of Nebraska.

Dick's plan to build upon his brother's bequest involved three additional components:  (1) raising another $50,000 in gifts from the family and friends of Rick Davis; (2) getting the University of Nebraska Foundation to agree to raise $100,000 to match the gifts from Rick's family and friends; and (3) getting the Nebraska Legislature to appropriate $800,000 for a four-to-one match of the $200,000 from private sources. He succeeded in all three of these efforts, the latter with outstanding leadership from Senator Ernest Chambers of Omaha.

The Davis-Chambers Scholarship Program is intended to be more than just a mechanism for helping students attend the University. With the help of corporate sponsors, attempts will be made to establish mentor relationships and internships for all Davis Scholars. It is hoped the Davis Scholars of today will serve as the role models for those who might become future Davis Scholars. It is also hoped that the successful careers of Rick Davis and the community leaders associated with the Davis Scholarship Program will encourage all students to achieve to their maximum academic potential, to become successful members of the business and professional communities, and to in turn help others become successful in their education and career pursuits.
